Alina Clay: Advocate, Not Activist
“I absolutely do not identify as an activist,” says Alina Clay. Alina takes her advocacy seriously by way of her interdisciplinary honors program and her position as co-director for the Student Government Association’s Diversity Affairs Committee.

Around the country, students are celebrating academic achievements and cultural identities at specialized commencement events. Two weeks ago, we celebrated our fourth annual Lavender Graduation and seventh annual Multicultural Graduation Celebration.

Initiatives in Arts and Sciences
The College of Arts and Sciences seeks to promote in all its students the values of intellectual inquiry, civic engagement, and an understanding of our world’s rich cultural heritages. The college is proud of the strides it has taken to be a leader of diversity and inclusion, and its ongoing initiatives to continually advance a welcoming and inclusive climate.

Commission for Women
The Commission for Women is an advisory group to the chancellor. Its main purpose is to cultivate a welcoming and inclusive campus environment with special attention given to the needs of women. The CFW hosted several events this year to recognize women in the fields of STEM and the visual arts.

Marian Wright Edelman
Social Activist Honored
Marian Wright Edelman has received more than 100 honorary degrees and many awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Robert F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Award. On May 8, we will award her an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

School of Music and Ethnomusicology
Ethnomusicology thinks about music on a broad scale. Ethnomusicology studies, as well as documents, the musics of diverse cultures in their cultural context. The School of Music hosted the Society for Ethnomusicology’s annual Southeast and Caribbean chapter conference in March.
